⦁ Designs are intended to integrate architecture with nature ⦁ Integrate ancient beliefs utilizing geometric patterns, symmetry, directional alignments ⦁ Vastu means ‘dwelling’, residing place of God & man. ⦁ It is based on the 5 basic elements – Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Jal (Water), Bhumi (Earth), Aakasha (Space) which are known as Panchabhutas.


The rules of Vastu-shastra render beauty, structural stability and quality of spaces by virtue of light, sound and volume management. They also evoke in the person an attuning of his person to its structure and ambience.


History of Vaastu Shastra

⦁ Principles purely based on effect of sunrays
⦁ Part of Vedas about 4000-5000 years old
⦁ Originates in the Sthapatya Veda, a part of Atharva Veda
⦁ Can be found during Ramayana, Mahabharata
⦁ Application can be seen even in the cities of Mohenjo-Daro & Harappa
⦁ Mandala design principle of squares and circles - follow a grid geometrical design called vastu-purusha-mandala. This design plan has three important components - Mandala means circle, Purusha is universal essence at the core of Hindu tradition, while Vastu means the dwelling structure


5 Elements / Panchabootas

5 elements of Vastu shastra

Entire Vasthu system revolves around these 5 element system. One direction is associated with each of these 5 elements.
⦁ WATER occupies Jalasthan, points to NORTH EAST.
⦁ FIRE occupies Agnisthan, points to SOUTH EAST.
⦁ EARTH occupies Bhoomisthan, points to SOUTH WEST.
⦁ AIR occupies Vayusthan, points to NORTH WEST.
⦁ SPACE occupies Brahmasthan, points to the CENTRE.

⦁ North-East (3 am – 6 pm)
Brahma Mahurat
best for meditation, yoga, exercise or study
best suited for Pooja / prayer room, living room, study room
⦁ East (6am – 9am)
Best is to get ready for the day ahead
Best suitable for bathroom (not toilet)
Can also be used for living room, unmarried children’s bedroom, guest bedroom, dining room, Pooja room and even study room
⦁ South-East (9 am – 12 noon)
preparing food and going to job
best suited for kitchen, office or unmarried son’s bedroom

⦁ South (12 noon – 3pm)
Intensity of sunlight is very high
Best used for store room, staircase and even toilets
Also good for office
⦁ South-West (3 pm – 6 pm)
best for master bedroom
also staircase or strong room can be located here
⦁ West (6 pm – 9 pm)
Best time to relax & dine
Best location to have dining room
Also use to locate children’s bedroom, prayer room, study room or staircase
